Toilet Bowl Ice cream Cups

Filed under: Bits & Pieces - thebox @ 12:15 am

Dan Bloom says: “You’ve read about the toilet-bowl theme restaurant in southern Taiwan, reported widely around the world by the news services a few weeks ago.
“The restaurant was so popular among Taiwanese diners, young and old, that the owners opened up a second joint in what they hope will become an islandwide chain, with some franchises eventually in Hong Kong and Japan. Los Angeles or New York? Never!
“Now comes eyewitness news of a small operation in one of south Taiwan’s night markets in Chiayi City, where a pretty woman runs a “squat toilet cup ice cream” dispenser on one of the main shopping streets in town. Passersby have their choice of chocolate or vanilla soft ice cream that is dispensed into light-green squat toilet-shaped plastic cups, seen here, all for a very affordable NT$25, which comes to about 75 cents in American money.”

Amazing scientific images from Princeton

Filed under: Bits & Pieces - thebox @ 11:47 pm

SnowPrinceton has announced winners in its Art of Science competition in which scientists from many disciplines were invited to submit beautiful images generated by their research. These images are amazing and although I liked the winning three, my personal favourite would be Snow:

This image illustrates An optical micrograph of self-assembled pattern in polymer thin film. When a polymer film is heated above its glass transition temperature and a mask is placed at a small distance above the film, the interplay between electrostatic force and surface tension can create interesting patterns.

Compound in Teflon A ‘Likely Carcinogen’

The Environmental Protection Agency’s own scientific advisory panel has identified perfluorooctanoic acid, a chemical compound used to make Teflon, as a “likely carcinogen” in a report it plans to submit to the agency next month.
The draft report is significant because it could prompt agency officials to regulate the processing agent—known as PFOA or C-8—for the first time. The EPA is in the midst of seeking millions of dollars in fines from DuPont Co., which makes PFOA in Parkersburg, W.Va., on the grounds that the chemical giant failed for 20 years to report possible health and environmental problems linked to the compound.
